Open letters to the viewers, host and production team of Satyamev Jayate

In General, Media on May 9, 2012 at 15:57

I know that almost every Indian out there has already watched Satyamev Jayate and are probably done with the discussions, too. I just watched the programme (online) last night. That’s right, only last night. Having seen it, I thought it was time to look into what people were writing about it. I had already seen the status messages and the tweets and found that people only had good things to say about it. Good. But if you look into the blog posts on the show, you see some differing opinions. So much so that I had to put in my two cents. I just choose to do that in the form of open letters, this time.

Dear Viewers,

That was a commendable effort as far as the treatment of the show was concerned and I am sure that nobody disagrees there. I guess where we disagree is about the change that is meant to come about.

It’s true that we are well aware of the issue. This episode of Satyamev Jayate may not be able to wipe out female infanticide/foeticide, but I’m sure there will be some change. Stars have a kind of appeal that others do not, so I’m sure some people will listen and some people will do their own little bits to take this effort (hopefully it turns out to be a movement)a wee bit forward if not anything else. I guess any little change is better than no change at all.

Until proven wrong (you know what I’m taking about if you have seen the show) let us believe that certain sections of society look at stars as nothing short of gods and they will heed what this super-star had to say. Let us believe that all the crazy and not-so-crazy fans of this superstar will refuse to do the unthinkable. We know AK is not into this for the money but to start conversations and to make some difference for the better.  Let’s not be cynical. Let’s hope for the best, atleast this time. Let’s believe in change, let’s hope for change. Maybe this Aamir Khan, whom India adores and respects will use his influence on the little drops that make the mighty ocean. India needs a show that that can influence; something like an Oprah show of its own.

Now to the host:

Dear Mr. Khan and producers of Satyamev Jayate

Good job. I’m sure everybody you’ve met have already said that you. Keep up the good work. I’m sure you have heard that too. I only hope that every episode is as hard-hitting as the first episode of the show. Our conscience has to be pricked again and again. Follow-ups are a must so as to keep the conversation going. Follow-ups are a must to turn us into believers from the cynics we couldn’t help turning into.

Now why does female foeticide and female infanticide happen? Is it because people want a future for their family names or is it because of the burden of dowry? Or could it be because the world is so unsafe for the girl child? We would like to know. We would like to hear from the experts, just as we did in the first episode.

And please please, please, do not let this show work according to a formula. Let us not see predictable segments (of the show). I repeat, lets turn into believers,  from the cynics we couldn’t help turning into.

With great appreciation and great expectations,

Just another wordpress blogger.

For the History records

In Media on January 18, 2012 at 16:57

Today is another  of those days that will go down in History (internet History, to be precise).  We’re talking PIPA again, only this time it is not a famous sister but the Protect IP Act along with SOPA (Stop Online Privacy Act) in the wake of several well-known sites chosing this day to oppose these Acts that the US Senate is getting ready to vote on.

If you have been watching Television all morning, you have probably seen this image

Wikipedia

For the record, here are screen shots of some other big online companies that are participating in the online strike against the Acts:

Hollywood and Silicon Valley have their own takes on the Acts and the discussions will not go anywhere anytime soon.  Here are a few basic Q&As from the capital of Silicon Valley.

A guide to SOPA and PIPA

As for my take, I’m still trying to come up with it. In the meantime, I’ll just say that the one thing that I am absolutely sure of, is that I am not in favour of censorship.
